Here in Round Top, pie brings people together. Especially the pie at Royers Pie Haven, whose reputation as some of the best pie in Texas exceeds the limits of our small town. Tara Royer knew that the pie being served at her family’s restaurant, Royers Round Top Café, was something special even before the Pie Haven existed. “When we would get interviewed for TV or news articles, we were only ever asked about pie,” she explains. And for good reason — if you’ve never had a slice of some of this state-renowned pie, you’re missing out on something special (Texas Trash, anyone?).
Because of the high demand for the pie from Royers Round Top Café, it just made sense to open a shop dedicated to the delicious treat. Royers Pie Haven opened in Henkel Square in the early 2010s and has been serving coffee, pie and good vibes ever since. “I liked having the word ‘haven’ in the name because it sounded like a sanctuary,” says Tara. “Royers Round Top Café is loud and eclectic, and I wanted the Pie Haven to be somewhere that I could channel my creativity. I wanted it to be a sweet haven for people who came to visit.” There, the staff strives to provide great food, friendly service and a calming atmosphere.
Tara says she’s proud to be part of a community that is dedicated to working together in making the town an inviting place for visitors. And the delicious pies that she bakes and serves has given her meaningful relationships with people she wouldn’t have met otherwise. “I’ve met so many wonderful people in my life because of pie,” she says. “We always say that we didn’t pick pie, God picked pie for us.”
Tara Royer’s new book, Eat. Pie. Love., an illustrated devotional sprinkled with easy-to-follow recipes, will be released March 3, 2020. To learn more about Royers Pie Haven, check out their Instagram. To find more mouthwatering places to eat in Round Top, visit our Dine page.
